As a DLeNM Professional Subscriber, you will be able to access a collection of 13 videos of selected speakers from La Cosecha 2009, “Nuestro lenguaje, cultura, y herencia: growing and preparing tomorrow’s leaders.” These will become available to you over the course of the year, literally allowing you to “take Cosecha home with you” to re-visit and share with colleagues. As a companion to each video, we’ve developed a brief study guide that you may choose to use to support your conversation and reflection. This provides focus, guidelines, and resources for study groups, grade level collaborations, university professors, or others engaged in professional dialogue. The Academic and Political Discourse of Minority Language Education

Dr. Jim Cummins
La Cosecha 2009 Keynote Presentation—November 19, 2009

Description/Overview: Dr. Cummins touches on four key strands in describing the consensus among researchers with respect to the legitimacy of bilingual education: power relations in school and community that range from coercive to collaborative; the disconnect between education/language policy and research; literacy engagement as a key predictor for literacy/biliteracy attainment; and the nature of language separation and intersection in dual language programs.
