Speaker: Dr. Pauline Gibbons, University of Technology, Sydney, Australia
This presentation focuses on the teaching of reading in a second language, grounded in the theme of “high challenge, high support.” Dr. Gibbons discusses “before” and “during” reading activities that “scaffold up” English learners to read age-appropriate texts. These activities build bridges between what learners bring to a text and the text itself, while modeling processes and strategies that effective readers use as they read.
