New Mexico Universities Offer Educators Spanish Immersion Opportunities

 

New Mexico Universities are offering a number of opportunities to improve your academic level Spanish skills, to take course work towards a bilingual endorsement and/or prepare for La Prueba, the Spanish proficiency exam for teachers.

 
 
 
 
   

 

Summer Critical Institutes
 
An institute for teachers that develops content curriculum that aligns itself with appropriate content standards, language objectives and effective dual language strategies.
 
Facilitators: DLeNM Staff and Veteran Dual Language Teachers
 
Duration: 4 days, 4 ½ hours/day
 
Audience: 20 - 30 Participants per Institute
 
Cost: $375.00/participant; Includes: Continental breakfast, materials

La Siembra
 
A new program institute for school communities considering the design and implementation of a dual language program
 
Facilitators: Veteran Dual Language Teachers

An institute designed for young and veteran programs implementations. It allows programs to self-evaluate, and action plan to strengthen their program’s implementation.

Workshop: Building Oral Language Through the Use of Poetry

 

This workshop will demonstrate how poetry is used to build oral language in a two-way dual language kindergarten and first grade classroom. Strategies used will be connected to practical application of findings in the area of brain research and language acquisition. The workshop will include a demonstration of how poetry is introduced and the different ways in which students interact with poetry to build oral language skills. Handouts will include sample poems that can be used in the classroom.

Workshop: Sheltering Strategies for the Dual Language Classroom

 

This two hour workshop is designed for both classroom and resource teachers.  It offers training in several of the most dynamic, adaptable, and practical strategies for teaching second language learners.  These strategies focus on making instruction comprehensible to all learners, developing oral fluency and vocabulary, and helping every child feel comfortable, included, and excited about class participation. Teachers taking part in this workshop will walk away with a handful of excellent techniques they can immediately apply in their own class settings.

  Workshop: Establishing a Site Based Database
 

Used to monitor student achievement/performance longitudinally. Perfect for collecting and disaggregating data from short-cycle assessments to be used to drive program implementation and instructional delivery decisions.

Duration: (2 hrs + 2 hr prep meeting)

  Audience: Admin. & Instructional Leadership Teams, 12-14 participants

Presently there are administrative study groups meeting monthly in Santa Fe, Albuquerque and soon in Las Cruces.

Part of our mission, DLeNM Staff and Board Members are available to give Dual Language presentations to business, educational and political organizations as to the design effectiveness of our program models.

Requests for presentations may be refined to meet your particular educational need. Please give as much notice as possible when making your request.

Located near the Albuquerque Sunport, the office offers a modest meeting room (14-20 people), professional library and a great view of downtown Albuquerque as well as the Sandia Mountains. This space is available to dual language program staffs on a first come, first served basis. No rental fee required. Donation requested for “coffee/snack fund”
